Did you know?

Nappies

Each little cherub will wee and poo their way through 6,000 to 7,000 nappies before they are fully toilet trained. That’s a lot of nappy changes, money and waste!

On average, disposable nappies cost between 17 and 59 cents each, depending on brand. Taking an average of 38 cents each, and a modest 5 nappies per day, that can equate to:

But it's not just about money

It takes about one cup of crude oil to make each disposable nappy, and a lot of water and energy goes into the manufacturing process too.

In Australia and New Zealand combined, a whopping 3.75 million disposable nappies are used on average each day.

Conventional disposable nappies are estimated to take up to 150 years to break down.

There are a lot of options when it comes to low and no waste toileting for babies and toddlers.

Option 1: Toileting from birth

Visit our Toileting from Birth page to learn how to minimise nappy use altogether.

Option 2: Reusable nappies

Reusable nappy types fall under three main categories:

Cloth squares - made from cotton, bamboo, hemp or a blend, these are generally the cheapest option

Pre-folds – made from cotton or bamboo, and used inside a fitted, leak-proof cover

Modern cloth nappies (MCNs) – shaped like a disposable nappy and fastened with velcro or press studs

MCNs mimic disposable nappies most closely. It's worth trying a few different types and styles to find the one that suits you.

Adorable bums!

If you weigh up the water used to grow cotton, process it into disposable nappies, line it with plastic, all for a single use; cloth nappies use significanlty less water in their lifetime than a single use disposable nappy.

Do something positive:

Take the nappy switch challenge

Start with one change.

Make the first nappy of the day a cloth nappy. Once you get the hang of it, increase to two, then three. Before you know it, you'll have a cute cloth bum crawling, climbing and eventually running around the house!
